A bad hailstorm can cause substantial damage throughout your home’s exterior, but your roof tends to bear the brunt of the storm. Once hail stones reach a size larger than a half-inch in diameter, they are heavy enough to cause serious damage. Check after the storm for the common signs of damage, and call your roofer if you find any of them.

When to Call a Roofer After a Hailstorm

1. Asphalt Shedding Granules

If you have an asphalt shingle roof, then this is the top sign to look for. The chunks of ice will knock the asphalt loose in your shingles when they impact it. They’ll shed the granules the shingles are made of, which will accumulate in the gutter. It looks like a course black sand and means that those shingles need to be replaced.

2. Bruising

lebanon rooferThe hail impact may cause damage that isn’t clearly visible, but a roofer will be able to feel for it with their fingers. The ice dents the material, leaving behind a small indentation that may feel softer than the rest of the shingle. This is called bruising because it is much like the way the skin of an apple bruises.

3. Other Damage

Look around your home’s exterior for other signs of more easily noticeable damage. If there are torn spots in your flashing, dented HVAC vents, bent gutters, or dents in your car’s body, then the storm was bad enough to do severe damage. You can reasonably assume that your roof suffered similar damage.
