If you’ve always lived in a home that’s connected to a public sewer, buying a property with a septic system can be a little daunting. However, septic system maintenance is easy if you know what to do. Use this guide to help you properly care for your septic system and keep it in excellent condition.

Do:

Stick to a pumping schedule.

Tanks generally need to be pumped every three to five years to prevent backflow into the house and leach field damage. How often yours needs to be pumped will depend on its size and the number of people in the household. You may need the help of a septic contractor to determine the schedule.

Know where your system is.

septic system maintenanceMake a note of where your tank and leach field are, and fence off these areas. Don’t allow heavy machinery and vehicles above the tank, as they’ll compact the soil and damage the system. Avoid planting trees near the area, as their roots may force their way into the plumbing to access the waste’s nutrients.

Don’t:

Use harsh cleaners.

Chemicals, like bleach, detergents, and drain cleaners, will kill the helpful bacteria in the tank. These bacteria are needed to effectively break down waste. If you need to use cleaning agents, opt for natural, eco-friendly products.

Dispose of inappropriate items.

Only water, human waste, and septic-safe toilet paper should go into the system. Avoid flushing baby wipes and feminine products down the drain, as they’ll clog pipes and backup the system. Never put cooking oils, fibrous vegetable peelings, and coffee grounds in the garbage disposal because they’ll clog the leach field.
