Winter conditions, such as limited visibility and icy roads, often lead to an increase in auto collisions and accidents. Because of this, all drivers should be more diligent with their car maintenance and employ defensive driving techniques. Before you get out on the road this winter, be sure to follow the tips below to stay safe all season long.

How to Stop Auto Accidents This Winter

1. Increase Following Distance

Your stopping distance should increase when the road is wet or icy since you lose some of your traction. Limited visibility may also make it more difficult to see what’s happening in front of you. Slow down and increase the distance between you and the car in front of you. Follow the three-second rule; when the vehicle in front of you passes something stationary, it should take three seconds before you pass it.

2. Schedule Car Maintenance for Your Tires

You can check this yourself by using the “Penny Test.” Place a penny, heads up, in your tire tread. If you can see Abraham Lincoln’s head, your tires need to be replaced. If your tires are in good condition, then check their pressure once a week and top them off if needed. Air compresses when it gets colder, so your tire pressure will go down as temperatures drop, even without a leak. Low tire pressure can increase the chance of blowouts and flat tires while driving.

3. Drive in the Safest Areas

When there is snow on the road, drive in the tracks of other cars that came before you, as these areas have the most traction. Take care, move slowly, and keep a good grip on the wheel when changing lanes, since ice may build up between lanes. Take care on bridges or underpasses, since these stretches of the road tend to get icy first. If possible, avoid driving when conditions are especially dangerous, and rely on public transit or ride-sharing services.
