There’s no better way to celebrate spring than taking a front-row seat of an ATV in the outdoors. However, if you’re new to off-road vehicles, you may be nervous. No one wants an accident on their first ride, so below are a few quick tips to keep you safe and having fun.

Basic ATV Riding Guide

1. Remember Safety Gear

Always wear sturdy shoes and a Department of Transportation (DOT)-approved helmet, whether you’re a driver or a passenger. Long pants, long sleeves, and gloves will help prevent skin injuries, while sunglasses or goggles will provide protection from wind, bugs, dust, and mud.

2. Learn About Your Vehicle

Not all ATV’s are equal in power, so check that your vehicle is suitable for a beginner. Spend time familiarizing yourself with the throttle, clutch, brake, and all other safety components of your vehicle, and make sure you have solid footing. Also, ensure there is enough gas in the tank, so you don’t get stranded while riding.

3. Practice the Throttle

atvMuch like you would practice shifting in a manual car, get comfortable slowly engaging the throttle to accelerate your vehicle in a flat, open area. This takes practice, so be patient with yourself. You don’t want to go too quickly and flip the ATV, potentially hurting yourself and the vehicle.

4. Have a Buddy System

Ask a more experienced driver to follow closely behind you as you begin driving. It helps to have someone coach you on driving technique, talk you through tricky terrain, and give you space from other drivers or pedestrians on the trails. This ensures that you learn the best methods while also minimizing risk.

5. Relax & Have Fun

Once you feel comfortable with the basics, start to experiment with turns and increase your speed. Confidence comes with practice, and so does the fun. Keep your elbows and knees bent to absorb bumpy terrain, and focus your eyes ahead to take in the scenery.
