If you’re planning to attend a black-tie event, a tuxedo rental provides an easy and affordable way to look great. Choosing the right style and fit of men’s formal wear is simple once you know the rules. From head to foot, here’s how to tell whether a tuxedo fits you.

How to Find the Perfect Fit for Your Tuxedo Rental

1. Collar

Put on a jacket, fasten the single or top button, and look at yourself in a rearview mirror. If you notice bulges or gaps in the fabric around your neck, try on a smaller size or different style. The collar should rest smoothly along the sides and back of your neck.

2. Shoulders

tuxedo-rentalWhen the shoulder pads of a tux jacket stick out over your shoulders, the jacket is too large. You want tuxedo shoulders that hug yours.

3. Sleeves

Tuxedo jacket sleeves are the perfect length when the hems stop at the wrist bone. You should see half an inch of your shirt sleeves, which is just enough to reveal a pair of classic or funky cufflinks.

4. Jacket Bottom

To check a tuxedo jacket’s bottom hem length, relax your arms at your sides. If the jacket bottom covers your rear end at its inward curve, it’s long enough. The jacket is too tight if its vent pulls open.

5. Trousers

For a slimmer look, choose pants with a flat front rather than pleats. Regardless of your choice, you shouldn’t feel any material pulling when sitting down. Tuxedo trousers never have belt loops, so wear suspenders for secure comfort at the waist.

Tuxedo pants don’t have cuffed hems. To achieve a perfect look at your feet, the trousers should break over your shoelaces slightly and hit the tops of your shoe heels in the back.
