roof replacement is best accomplished with careful preparation. If you’re ready for the arrival of your contractors, they can work more quickly and efficiently to deliver the results you want. Here’s what you should know.

A Roof Replacement Preparation Checklist

1. Protect Belongings

Because roof replacement involves a lot of hammering, take mirrors, clocks, pictures, and decorations off walls so they don’t get damaged. If you have chandeliers, remove them as well. Cover furnishings in your attic with plastic drop cloths or sheeting to protect them from dust and debris.

2. Assess the Yard

Trim tree branches away from your roof to improve access. Protect plants and flower beds with drop cloths or tarps. For the contractors’ safety and convenience, mark the location of sprinklers with orange tape.

3. Clear the Area

Find a place to store vehicles, grills, and outdoor furniture so they’re not in the way. Bring any toys or tools inside for the same reason. If you have pets and children, arrange activities and play dates so they stay safely away and are unable to interfere with the work.

4. Inform Neighbors

Let your neighbors know about roof replacement a week or two in advance. They won’t be surprised about the commotion, and they can keep their car, pets, and children out of danger.

5. Provide Access to Electricity

Roofing contractors need power. Let them know where to find electrical outlets throughout your home. If you don’t have any external outlets, thread long extension cords through your home to reach the ones inside. Also, leave your windows, doors, and gates open to facilitate access.
