Proper mirror placement can lighten up a space, open up a room, and invite people into your home. Enhance the visual appeal of your home by adding a few, deliberately placed mirrors throughout the home. The following guide will help you decide how to proceed.

Do:

Think about the surrounding area.

Too many mirrors can feel crowded, so place a few sparingly throughout the house. Angle them to reflect the room’s focal point, such as a chandelier or unique piece of furniture.

Consider the surrounding frames as well. For example, hanging a circular mirror around rectangular decor will create depth in the room. Or try adding in a bold, dark frame in a white room as an accent piece.

Make space in small rooms.

Mirrors give the illusion of extra space, so position a floor-length mirror opposite a door or window to invite light, warmth, and openness to a small room. Leaning it against the wall will create a slight angle that grows the room as it reflects a new perspective.

Don’t:

Place it too high.

MirrorWhen you place a mirror too high in a room, it will not be as functional. It won’t create the room-expanding effect if you can’t see what it’s reflecting. Hang it at about eye level in order to present a large living space with the ability to see yourself and adjust your hair if necessary.

Hang it in direct sunlight.

While you want your mirror to reflect the sunlight from outside and warm up your space, direct sunlight can dull its reflective quality. Find a place that catches subtle glimpses of light and angles the secondhand light into the room.
