When it comes to the safety and proper function of your vehicle, fluids play a significant role. That’s why you’ll need to check each of them regularly. Consult the following auto maintenance guide to learn more about when you need oil changes and other fluid replacements.

Which Auto Fluids Should You Check?

1. Brake Fluid

Brake fluid powers the hydraulics of your braking system, making it possible for you to decelerate and stop. You’ll find the reservoir for this fluid in a translucent, cylindrical container at the rear of your engine. When it falls below the full line, add more to it.

2. Oil

oil changesAs a general rule, you should get oil changes every three months or 3,000 miles. You can also check the status of your oil yourself. Remove the dipstick from your tank, wipe off the tip, then submerge it back into the tank. When you remove it the second time, note the color of the oil. If it’s dark, burnt, or below the full line, have it replaced.

3. Coolant

Coolant is responsible for preventing your engine from overheating. You’ll find it in a small tank located near the engine with a radiator tube attached to it. The reservoir should be clear, allowing you to see the coolant level. When it runs low, replenish it.

4. Transmission Fluid

Your transmission supplies power to the wheels, and its fluid lubricates the parts within this system. Remove the dipstick from the reservoir in front of your engine to check the fluid. Wipe the tip, then insert it back into the reservoir before pulling it out to read it. If it’s below the halfway mark or the fluid color is dark brown, replace it.
