Pool pump upkeep is an often overlooked part of swimming pool maintenance. It’s not until the pump fully breaks down and renders the pool unusable that many people prioritize regular maintenance or repairs. Recognizing the early symptoms of a failing pump can help you minimize any damage and schedule repairs to get it up and running again quickly.

When to Schedule Pool Pump Repairs

1. Strange Noises

If you notice loud grinding or grating noises coming from your pool pump’s enclosure, the motor or one of its parts may have come loose from its mount. The noise could also be caused by friction if the bearings are damaged or parts need lubricating. If your pump doesn’t have an enclosure, foliage or branches may have gotten stuck in it.

If the pump is making an unusual noise—for any reason—turn it off immediately and call a swimming pool maintenance professional for a closer look.

2. Motor Failure

swimming pool maintenanceMany pool pumps work on a timer. If you notice yours is shutting down prematurely, it’s likely an issue with the motor or timer. First, test your timer by setting it to shut on and off in brief 5-minute intervals. If you notice any deviations, it can mean the timer is broken. If twigs and other debris have been sucked into the system, they may also be causing the motor to overheat and shut off as a failsafe. Clean out the pump filter each week. Should the motor fail again, turn it off until a technician arrives.

3. Leaks

If the water level in your swimming pool is falling, there’s a leak somewhere in the system. Look around pump piping for pooling water. Leaks can also occur where pipes connect if the O-ring or seal is damaged. This is often a quick fix and one that should be handled right away. Leaks cause significant water waste and may wear down the concrete foundation of the pump enclosure.
