Tire maintenance is crucial when it comes to preventing flats and blowouts. It’s important that you know how to properly care for them so that you can avoid accidents, stay safe on the roads, and enjoy a smooth ride. Below are several helpful tips for car tire upkeep.

Do:

Measure the tread.

One of the easiest ways to measure tire tread is to use a penny. Place the edge of the coin into one of the grooves of your tire. If you can see Lincoln’s head, your tread depth is below the recommended minimum of one-sixteenth of an inch. Change car tires with worn treads to prevent poor handling, blowouts, and collisions.

Check the pressure.

car tireYour car tires will lose air pressure over time, especially during the cold season. Approximately once per month, use a gauge to check the pressure. The recommended psi should appear on the inside of your driver’s side door or in your owner’s manual. Add or remove air according to the reading.

Don’t:

Speed.

Going over the speed limit causes your tires to wear down at a more rapid rate. Speeding also makes your tires more vulnerable to popping if you roll over bumps, debris, or other obstacles. Maintain a reasonable speed while driving to avoid issues with your car tires.

Forget rotations.

Your car tires will not wear evenly since they each undergo a different amount of stress. Rotations will reduce the amount of deterioration your tires experience, ultimately prolonging their lifespan. Have a mechanic perform this service at least once or twice per year.
