If you’ve ever considered customizing your truck, the topic of lift kits has likely surfaced at some point. Trucks already give you a boost, but a kit elevates your whole rig above every other car on the road. Here’s what you need to know about giving your vehicle a lift.

Defining Lift Kits

A lift kit raises your clearance and allows your vehicle to clear rocky and unstable ground more smoothly, especially at high speeds. This is particularly appealing to drivers who enjoy off-roading. If you want the feeling of a monster truck without replacing your ride, having a kit professionally installed will give you the elevation you’re looking for.

Depending on the model of your truck and your desired height, the vehicle may need to undergo some modifications. This will mostly hinge on the type of kit you need—body or suspension.

Suspension vs. Body Lift Kits

lift kitsBody lift kits raise the body of your vehicle 1 inch to 3 inches higher onto the frame using blocks and lift spacers. Factory suspension geometry and alignment will not change, so if you favor the way your truck rides and handles, you won’t have to worry about readjusting. Ground clearance will also remain the same, but the added height may slightly alter the stability of your vehicle. A higher clearance also means more room for larger tires.

Unlike body kits, suspension lift kits don’t have a 3-inch limit and can go as high as you desire. This allows for more ground clearance and the ultimate customization. However, suspension lifts are notoriously difficult to install and maintain. Many key components of your vehicle will likely need replacing, including the shocks, struts, and possibly the steering components. Supporting pieces of the lift might require replacements on occasion. Because of the costs of customization, suspension kits are more expensive.
