No matter how carefully you may drive, accidents happen. Hitting a deer may be beyond your control. Although collision with deer can result in expensive auto body repairs, they may also cause injuries and fatalities. For many drivers, deer collisions happen because they had no time to react. If drivers swerve to avoid an accident, they may skid off the road into a ditch or hit another vehicle. Here’s what you should know if you collide into a deer.

Steps to Take After a Collision With a Deer

Stay calm, and make sure no one is injured. Take note of anyone else involved in the crash and of any witnesses standing by. Call the police, and dial 911 if anyone is hurt.

Turn on your hazard lights. If moving your car is possible, pull over to the side of the road for safety as soon as it’s reasonable to do so. If the deer is still nearby, even if it seems wounded or dead, leave it alone. Injured and frightened animals can be dangerous.

Check for leaking fluids, broken lights, and missing or bent parts. Call a tow truck if you suspect you’ll need auto body repair or driving is not an option. When in doubt, stay put. If your headlights are out or fluid is leaking underneath your vehicle, don’t drive.

How to Avoid a Deer Collision

To reduce your chances of having a dangerous collision with a deer, pay  attention to the sides of the road in the evening when deer are more active and less visible. Don’t drive distracted. Turn on your headlights at dusk, and use your high beams when necessary.

When you see road signs warning about deer crossings or see deer in roadside brush, slow your speed. If a deer is standing in the road, honking is usually sufficient to clear it from your path.
