No matter why you need a storage unit or for how long, a little planning can help you make the most of the space. Whether it’s packing your belongings or choosing the right unit, there are some important do’s and don’t to follow so you can tackle the task like a professional.

Do:

Review unit sizes.

Go over self-storage unit sizes with your selected facility to determine what you need. A space that’s too large means you’re paying for cubic feet you aren’t using. You may want to organize your items in formation before you store them to get a working idea of what you require.

Use bins instead of boxes.

Even if you’re using an interior storage unit, bins do a better job of keeping insects, vermin, and the elements out. Containers are also stackable, while clear options make it easier to determine the contents.

Label everything.

Create labels for every bin and consider adding a contents list to each to avoid wasting time digging around. If you’re working with clear bins, simply slip the labels on the inside front, so they remain intact.

Don’t:

Forget to make a content list.

storageCreate two copies of a master contents list. Laminate one for storage unit placement and keep the other at home. A reference list provides the information you need before you drive to the facility, so you aren’t looking for items that are in your basement or attic.

Use plastic for everything.

Work with cushioning materials and other plastic only if there’s no risk of trapping moisture, which promotes mold and mildew growth. Use packing paper, moving pads, and old blankets and sheets to pack wooden items and furniture, electronics, fine art, and anything else subject to temperature changes.

Place items you’ll need in the back.

Keep bins with items you’ll need, such as seasonal clothing and decorations, in front of the storage unit for easy access. Everything else you don’t immediately require, such as family heirlooms and antique furniture, can go in the back. If the storage unit has space, leave an aisle in the middle for access to all of your belongings.
