Getting into your favorite pair of jeans can quickly become challenging when you're pregnant. However, even if your pants that used to fit now pinch at the waist and won't zip properly, that doesn't mean you have to give them up. Grab a few pieces of spandex and a quality sewing machine to turn them into a new pair of maternity jeans by following these simple steps.

Creating Maternity Jeans With Spandex

1. Rip the Seams

Turn your jeans inside out and carefully cut open the waistband just above an outer seam. Slide a seam ripper tool between the threads and separate the material about three to four inches down. Do the same for the other side, measuring the length of the rips to make sure they're even.

2. Insert Spandex

spandexGet about a half a yard of elastic material that's the same color as your jeans, and decide how many inches you want to expand your waistband. Divide that number by two so both sides have equal amounts, and then cut the material to size. Leave about half an inch on each side for sewing.

3. Pin Into Place

Take one side of the original seam and fold it back to prevent fraying. Then, place one edge of the new material along this fold and pin it into place. Do the same for the other side of the seam to fill in the gap, and repeat for the other side of the pants.

4. Sew the Material

Sew a straight stitch along the edge of the original seam, carefully knotting the thread before beginning up the other side of the material. Sew another straight stitch about an eighth of an inch away from the first to ensure it remains secure. Finally, trim the top of the material to keep it even.
