Getting a Pap smear is part of your visit to the OB-GYN. While this procedure can make some people nervous, it’s a painless and essential part of women’s health care. If you haven't had one before or aren’t sure why you need it, here's what you should know.

What to Know About Pap Smears

What’s a Pap smear?

Cervical cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer in women. A Pap smear collects a small sample of cells from your cervix and screens it for cancerous or precancerous cells. Get this test done regularly so you can detect problems early and receive quick treatment.

What should you expect?

OB-GYNWhen your OB-GYN conducts this procedure, they’ll insert a speculum into your vaginal opening to get a look at the cervix. Using a long swab, they’ll collect a small sample from the cervix. This is an unfamiliar feeling for some women, but it shouldn’t be any more uncomfortable than a small pinch. Your doctor will send your sample for testing, and you'll receive the results a few days or weeks later.

Who needs a Pap smear?

Every female under 65 with a cervix needs regular Pap smears. The test typically occurs during a regular annual checkup at the OB-GYN’s office. If you’re in your twenties, you’ll have one every three years; after that, you can get one every five years. After the age of 65, it’s unnecessary to keep testing unless you have previous abnormal results.

How can I prepare?

Before your appointment, let your OB-GYN know if you have any physical or psychological challenges that may make the exam difficult. With this knowledge, they’ll find ways to make the test more comfortable for you. Dress in clothing that you can remove easily, and visit the restroom before your exam to relieve pressure in the area. You can also request to have someone in the room with you to provide emotional support. If you’re menstruating at the time of your exam, you'll likely need to reschedule.
