When remodeling a kitchen to make it senior-friendly, you should focus on mobility, first and foremost, and this starts with a design that helps to maintain independence. Your loved ones will want a space that they can easily maneuver while remaining safe. Here are a few kitchen remodeling concepts to achieve that.

A Guide to Senior-Friendly Kitchen Design

1. Less Bending

Install high drawers that are shallow, so it puts less stress on the back and knees. Drawers serve a second purpose, as they’re ideal for displaying kitchenware and utensils. Stick to sinks instead of dishwashers unless they’re installed higher than the floor. When choosing a sink, get one that’s less than 10 inches deep to ensure they don’t have to bend over.

2. Accessibility

kitchen remodelingStandard kitchens have upper cabinets that are difficult to access for those with limited mobility. Instead, keep cabinets at hip level to make them easy to reach. Place the sink beside the stove so it’s simple to dump water and prepare food; a pot full of water can get heavy, and they may drop it, causing a slipping hazard.

3. Wide Spaces

Narrow or closed kitchen concepts are challenging to maneuver. If your loved one uses a wheelchair or a walker, the tight space will interfere with their mobility. Instead, create an open concept or expand the clearance between cabinets. To improve the look, use similar colors in the kitchen and the room that’s adjacent to it.

4. Safety First

Install slip-resistant flooring materials, like wood or porcelain tile. Avoid regular floor tiles that don’t have much texture and absorb water. Vinyl flooring is another alternative, as it’s soft on the feet. To prevent accidents, install rounding counter corners, shorter counters, and cabinet handles that don’t stick out too far.
