Oral health should be encouraged from a very young age. An early start promotes good habits and creates a foundation for regular dentist visits and healthy teeth. If your child will soon have their first tooth, here’s what you should know about helping them brush, floss, and bond with your dentist.

How to Promote Dental Health in Children

1. Start Young

When your child’s first tooth breaks through the surface of their gums, buy a soft-bristle toothbrush and begin brushing their teeth twice per day for two minutes. When old enough, let them try brushing themselves, monitoring them as they go. Many dentists start seeing patients as young as 1 year old. Also, promote healthy eating habits at home by limiting starchy and sugary foods.

2. Lead by Example

Kids are sponges, so leading by example is hugely impactful. Let them watch you brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash. Talk about how much fun brushing is and how good it feels to have clean teeth and fresh breath. Make oral hygiene a bonding experience by brushing together.

3. Let Them Pick Brushes & Pastes

dentistKids get excited over little things. Let them pick out their toothbrush and toothpaste with your supervision and your dentist’s approval. Brushes with cartoon characters and bright colors delight and excite children. They can also choose flavored toothpastes and flosses.

4. Have Fun With It

Many videos and songs encourage oral health and brushing. The American Dental Association (ADA) has compiled a list of ones a child will likely enjoy. Stream them when you’re brushing to make dental care fun. Have a dance party. Use your imagination and tell stories as they brush. Make plaque the scary monsters and their toothbrush the superhero coming to save the day.
