It may be tempting to simply take off your shirt after a long day at work and toss it haphazardly into a pile. However, organizing and decluttering your closet can yield many benefits, such as saving time getting dressed and maximizing storage space. Here are a few different ways to do this.

How to Categorize Your Closet

1. Color

If you prefer to select an outfit based on color scheme, sort your shirts by hue. Either group hot and cold colors or organize the closet from left to right according to the colors of the rainbow. For example, hang all your red shirts on the far left and all your purple shirts on the far right, with all the rest segmented in between.

2. Sleeve Size

Hang all sleeveless shirts in one area of the closet. Next to them, hang all your cap-sleeve shirts. Follow this by a section of short-sleeve shirts, a group of three-quarter-length sleeves, an area of long sleeves, and so on. That way, you can quickly choose a top to suit the temperature.

3. Use

declutteringYou probably have shirts for work, casual shirts, and shirts for fancy occasions. Partition a section of your closet for each of these categories and stick with it. You can even get creative if you have shirts with special designs or printed messages. Grab a collared shirt for the next business meeting, or don a graphic tee for a night out with friends.

4. Season

Consider categorizing your closet based on the season in which you use them. For example, create a section for all of your short-sleeve, colorful summer shirts and divide them from heavier winter sweaters and fall flannels.
