Commonly used for gap filling, insulation, and flotation, polyurethane foam can be beneficial for professional boat repairers and owners alike. Ultra-buoyant and lightweight two-part polyurethane foam is excellent as a large cavity filler, helping provide insulation and keeping your boat afloat. For many, it may seem intimidating, but with a little know-how and the right safety precautions, the product can be the ideal choice for your next boating project.

Preparation

Typically sold in a two-part expanding liquid, polyurethane pour foam can expand anywhere from 25-30 times its original size. To ensure ample space for mixing and your required uses, be sure to measure the volume of the container or space before mixing your pour foam.

If possible, prepare your mixture in temperatures around 75-80° F for maximum expansion. If the workspace is too cold, the product will not expand to its full capacity, while mixing in an area that’s too hot may cause the product to overexpand. When pouring into boat decks or cavities, be sure to dry completely, as pour foam is moisture-sensitive.

Finally, follow all labeled manufacturer's instructions while wearing protective eyewear, gloves, and a respirator.

Applications

polyurethaneWhen used in marine applications, polyurethane foam provides insulation and permanent floatation, including the capability of keeping a capsized vessel afloat for extended periods.

Curing to a closed-cell foam, polyurethane provides superior water resistance, reducing absorption for years to come. Great for blind access voids and void filling in nonstructural applications, it can be poured directly underneath decks and inside cavities where lightweight floatation is needed to provide added buoyancy.
