Whether you use firearms for security or for enjoyment, you may encounter a problem with one at some point. Knowing what’s causing it and how to fix it is paramount to maintaining your safety. Below are a few common issues you may experience as a gun owner.

What Problems Do Firearms Commonly Have?

1. Dud Ammunition

This is perhaps the most common malfunction experienced by gun owners. When you shoot the gun with a piece of dud ammo in it, nothing will happen because of an issue with the powder or manufacture of it. The hammer will hit the bullet, but it won’t discharge. When this happens, keep the gun pointed at your target for at least another minute to ensure it’s not a delayed discharge. If nothing happens, remove the round and dispose of it properly. Never try to fire a dud piece of ammo again, as it’s dangerous.

2. Casing Does Not Eject

firearmsIf you shoot your gun and the spent casing doesn’t eject, it can create a hazardous situation if you try to fire again. Failure to eject the spent casing usually stems from a lack of proper gun maintenance and safety inspections, as a damaged, corroded, or dirty chamber can catch the casing and prevent its ejection. If this happens, make sure your magazine is firmly in place, tilt your gun to the side, and use the slide to eject the casing and put a new bullet in the chamber. Be sure to clean your gun and inspect it for signs of damage when you’re done shooting.

3. Bullet Does Not Get Fed Into the Chamber

Also known as a failure to feed, this occurs when a new bullet doesn’t get loaded into the chamber. Damaged magazines, worn magazine springs, a dirty gun, and faulty cartridges can all lead to this happening. If it does, take out the magazine and make sure the chamber is clear. If it appears dirty, clean it, and if there are signs of corrosion or rust, get advice from a trusted gun store on how to proceed. If everything looks fine, you can reload and try to fire again. Another failure to feed indicates an issue with the magazine or that you’re blocking the slide.
