Clutch issues are some of the most common reasons for transmission repairs. This is, in part, because they withstand so much regular use. Clutches are used to engage and disengage engine power from the transmission and are crucial at every traffic stop. To help you understand how they work, below are some of the most common types.

A Quick Guide to Clutches

1. Friction Clutch

The friction clutch is by far the most common type in automobiles. It utilizes friction to connect a spinning plate with other plates that are stationary or rotating at different speeds. Friction clutches are normally classified as push or pull types, depending on their relationship with the pedal. On a pull-type clutch, depressing the clutch pedal pulls the release bearing to disengage the drive, while on a push-option, the pedal disengages the drive by pushing the release bearing into the clutch.

2. Centrifugal Clutch

It utilizes centrifugal force, which moves outward from the center of a spinning body to cause the clutch to engage or disengage automatically at a set RPM. Meanwhile, semi-centrifugal clutches, which are used in high-performance vehicles, use a combination of centrifugal force and springs to engage the clutch.

3. Electromagnetic Clutch

The electromagnetic clutch runs off of a battery. Electrical current passed through a coil creates a magnetic current that attracts the pressure plate and engages the clutch. When the current is shut off, the clutch disengages and reconnects engine power to the transmission. This type of clutch is used in a wide variety of applications, from copying machines to factory automation equipment and conveyor belts.
