Having maintenance done by an auto mechanic will protect your vehicle from damage and ensure it’s working efficiently. There are multiple car fluids responsible for keeping the engine and other moving parts in prime condition, and these should be changed at regular intervals to ensure full functionality. While the manufacturer’s manual for your car will give recommendations for when to check all fluids, here’s an overview of a few that need to be changed and at which intervals.

What Automotive Fluids Need to be Flushed?

1. Coolant

The engine’s coolant keeps your vehicle from overheating by absorbing the heat it produces and transferring it to the radiator, where it’s cooled by moving air. Flushing helps prevent overheating and radiator problems.

Newer models require coolant checks about every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. Most manufacturers state the liquid can last up to five years, so you only need it changed if your auto mechanic spots sediment buildup. Models made in 2012 or earlier need changes every 50,000 miles.

2. Transmission Fluid

auto mechanicThis fluid is what keeps all the moving parts lubricated and moving smoothly. Over time, sediment, grime, and dirt can collect in it, making it less effective and causing excessive wear and tear.

Most manufacturers recommend flushing the transmission fluid after 75,000 miles. Some low-quality fluids may break down before then, creating excessive friction, heat, and sediment that can cause damage. If you know the type of liquid used for your vehicle, research the recommendations for flushes.

3. Brake Fluid

This allows the parts of your brake system to move. It’s designed to handle the high heat and pressure generated by the brakes without boiling. If you don’t have an auto mechanic change this regularly, it will degrade and become contaminated with moisture, causing it to boil and compromise the effectiveness of the braking system.

Schedule a fluid check every 20,000 miles. If the liquid is not clear or has a burnt smell, the auto mechanic will need to change it.
