Whether you enjoy it neat, on the rocks, or as an ingredient in a favorite craft cocktail, whiskey is known for its smooth, velvety, smoky, and slightly sweet flavor bouquet. Among those who enjoy this beverage, there is a common adage that “all bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon." To better understand the two, the below guide covers some key differences.

What Are the Differences Between Whiskey & Bourbon?

Place of Manufacture

Whiskey is made in various locations all around the globe, with scotch and Irish whiskey being among the most popular types used in craft cocktails.

However, bourbon is a uniquely American product. To qualify as bourbon, the whiskey must be made in the United States. Most of it is manufactured in Kentucky, but it can be made in any state to be considered bourbon.

Aging

craft cocktailsHow the alcohol is aged matters as well. Bourbon must be aged in new, oak-charred barrels, while whiskey can be aged in previously used barrels. So, if the whiskey was aged in a new barrel, it's also a bourbon.

Ingredients & Proof

Bourbon must contain at least 51% corn. Whiskey can contain corn, rye, wheat, or barley mash, and so can bourbon, but if the corn content meets the 51% threshold, the liquor qualifies as bourbon.

When whiskey enters the barrel for aging, it must be at 125 proof to be bourbon. It then must be distilled to no more than 160 proof and bottled at no less than 80 proof to keep this title.

Additives

Bourbons contain no additives except for additional water content. Whiskeys can add ingredients and preservatives to achieve color and flavor. However, if the liquid remains in a natural state with only some extra water to achieve the right proof, then the whiskey is bourbon.
