LASIK® surgery corrects a variety of vision issues, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Though the procedure is quick and painless, it’s essential that you advise your patients about the appropriate aftercare regimen to ensure their eye protection. Below, you’ll find a helpful recovery timeline to provide to your clients after LASIK surgery.

A Patient’s Guide to LASIK Aftercare

First 24 Hours

Recommend that your patients take the day off school or work after their LASIK appointment, since they won’t be able to see clearly. Tell them to keep their eyes closed as much as possible and wear post-op protective eyewear to shield excess light. Additionally, ask them to avoid reading, watching TV, and using electronic devices for 24 hours to prevent straining.

First Two Weeks

eye protectionYour patients can typically return to driving and low-impact exercise after about one week. Suggest that they wear UV protection glasses, especially when they go outdoors, to prevent sunlight from causing discomfort. To protect their eyes from infection, they should avoid makeup, lotions, and creams and apply prescription eyedrops regularly to prevent drying.

One Month

After about one month, your clients can usually engage in contact sports and strenuous physical activities. For an extra layer of eye protection, recommend wearing sports goggles to keep debris out of their eyes and safeguard them against harsh impacts.

Three to Six Months

Let your patients know that they’ll likely start noticing significant improvements in their vision about three to six months after their LASIK appointment. Encourage them to make their follow-up appointments and keep taking any medication as directed.
