Many homeowners don’t think about their roofing until it experiences an issue. However, since the roof plays such an important role in protecting the rest of the house, you should always be aware of any risks to your roof. Below are four common issues that affect roofs.

Different Types of Roofing Issues

1. Loose or Missing Shingles

Shingles can become damaged due to a variety of reasons, such as of debris falling onto the roof, extreme weather, or simply old age. You can typically notice the damage from the ground, but leaks in the roof and higher energy bills can also result from the reduced insulation. Contractors can often reattach or replace loose shingles, but if the affected area is large enough, a roof replacement is often a more effective solution.

2. Leaking Roof

RoofingYou can detect a leaking roof by searching for water damage to the ceiling and walls, as well as mold growing in the attic or crawlspace. The most common cause is damage to either the shingles or flashing. Wherever the hole is, it needs to be fixed immediately to avoid expensive water damage.

Another reason for a leaking roof is improper draining due to malfunctioning gutters and leaders. Check to see if any debris is blocking the water in the gutters, and make sure the downspouts are guiding the water a safe distance away from the property. Installing gutter guards helps to keep debris out.

3. Tree Damage

Trees with limbs hanging over the roof often cause problems. As the branches move in the wind, they hit the shingles and either loosen them or knock them off entirely. In especially bad storms, tree limbs can even penetrate the roof. Keep your trees trimmed if they’re close to your home, and remove any trees that pose a serious threat to the integrity of your roof.

4. Moss Growth

The shingles on the roof are often moist and humid, providing optimal conditions for moss growth. If you spot moss growing on your roof, have it removed immediately. Its small root system can penetrate shingles and ruin the structural integrity of the roof.
