If you’ve recently scheduled a photo shoot for your toddler, you may be wondering which outfit to choose for them. You want to pick something classic that still shows off your little one’s personality and matches the scenery. Use the following guide to get an idea of where to start.

How to Dress Your Toddler for a Photo Shoot

1. Keep It Simple

Don’t overwhelm the frame by choosing colors that are too bright or patterns that are too loud, especially if the shoot is in a studio with studio lighting. Coordinate similar colors or hues with matching tones to create a cohesive final image. Plain white is a smart option for young toddlers and babies because it allows the focus to remain on their faces. You may also use bright, solid colors or pastels to communicate youth, vibrancy and personality.

2. Consider the Setting

Have your children wear clothing appropriate to the setting of the photo shoot. For example, if the session is outdoors in the green grass and sunshine, dress them in picnic-style clothing. Clothe them in sweaters and cute boots for an autumnal look under the changing leaves. If the setting is more urban, dress them up a bit and have fun with props.

3. Think About the Weather

Your child will be chilled and grumpy if you dress them in too little clothing on a cold day or warm clothes under the hot sunshine. Always pick an outfit based on the current weather for an outdoor shoot.

4. Highlight Their Personality

Ultimately, the photo shoot is meant to create lasting mementos of your child, which means that you should help their personality shine through in the images. Choose the clothing that represents their personality while keeping it tasteful and sweet. Consider choosing garments in their favorite color or a shirt with their favorite animal on the front.  Always bring there ‘loveys’ or favorite toys.  This is agreat way to keep your toddler happy while also capturing their favorite things that will soon change as they grow.  Most importantly, let them be themselves and have fun at the session.  This helps your photographer capture every detail you will want to remember and hold onto.  Remember, serious photos are sometimes the prettiest.  They don’t have to “smile” in every shot.
