Wearing contact lenses is a standard eyewear method that is convenient and cost-effective. It can save you money on glasses and repairs, and offer you comfort and confidence. If you’re preparing for a trip and wear contacts, keep in mind the following do’s and don’ts of traveling with contact lenses to ensure you’re flight-ready.

Do:

Check how much liquid you can take with you on an airplane

Carry-on luggage allows one quart-sized contact lensesbag filled with 3.4-ounce liquid bottles per passenger. If you have a large bottle of contact solution, buy an empty 3-ounce bottle at your local drugstore and fill it up for a travel-sized option. If you’d like to take the large container, you will need to seal it and put it in your checked luggage.

Consider carrying disposable contacts

There are many brands of contact lenses that last for different durations. Daily, disposable contacts are easy to travel with because you don’t need contact cases or solution. You can also opt for bi-weekly or monthly-wear contacts if you prefer less waste.

Don’t:

Sleep on the flight with your contacts in

You should never sleep with your contacts in; doing so can result in some uncomfortable symptoms. You increase your risk of eye infection, corneal neovascularization, and inflammation of the eye. If you do this regularly, you can damage your eyes and worsen your sight.

Forget to pack a pair of glasses

Always carry an extra pair of glasses in your carry-on or purse, just in case. You never know if your contacts may accidentally rip, get lost, or irritate your eyes. Sometimes your eyes need a break from wearing contacts every day. If you don’t have glasses or need a prescription changed, visit your eye doctor before leaving for your trip.
