Bringing a new baby home is a drastic change for everyone, including your dog. They’ll have new rules to follow and will have to adjust to the noise and not getting as much attention. You want to ensure everyone is comfortable, so start preparing your pet now. Using proven pet care tips will ensure a smooth transition when your baby comes home.

How to Get Your Dog Ready for a New Baby

1. Schedule a Pet Care Exam

You’ll first want to know that your pet is healthy. Pets carry a lot of germs that they may transfer to your baby. You want to make sure there aren’t any viruses or bacteria that are a threat to your pet’s or your baby’s health. While they can’t spread core illnesses like distemper, make sure they’re up to date on vaccinations anyway. Their veterinarian can provide a full pet care exam and offer advice on acclimating your pet to your baby.

2. Teach New Rules

You’ll also want to begin breaking bad habits like jumping on your lap or nibbling that could accidentally hurt the baby.

3. Introduce Noises & Smells

Babies introduce new noises and new smells. Try playing sound clips of babies crying, the sound of nursery toys, or songs you’ll play for your baby. Let the dog smell the crib, clothes, baby toys, and other new items, so they’ll be familiar with them. This will create a less stressful environment.

4. Provide Less Attention

Your dog isn’t going to get the same amount of attention, and they’ll need to get used to it. Spend a little less time with them when you’re home. It can be heartbreaking at first, but you’ll both adjust. Cut playtime shorter or reduce cuddling time. Focus instead on improving the quality of your time together. Shower them in praise and affection, so they know they’re still an irreplaceable part of your life.
