Found in numerous states throughout the U.S., the emerald ash borer beetle is an invasive insect that has so far decimated millions of ash trees despite arborists’ efforts. Being able to identify this beetle and the damage it causes is the first step in stopping it from harming even more trees. Here’s what you need to know about this arboreal threat.

About Emerald Ash Borer Beetles

Emerald ash borers are native to Asia and can be identified by their shiny metallic green color. Adult beetles, which are usually about a ½ of an inch long, typically feast on tree foliage, which causes minimal damage to the plant. The real threat is the beetle larvae, which eat bark inside the trunk as they grow. As feeding larvae create holes, ash trees experience insufficient water and nutrition and ultimately die.

Signs of an Affected Tree

arboristThe following signs indicate the presence of an emerald ash borer beetle:

  • D-shaped holes in the bark where adult beetles exit after the larval phase
  • Foliage that appears wilted or takes on a yellowish hue
  • Shoot growth from a tree’s trunk or roots
  • Tree bark that seems to be splitting

Also, be on the lookout for excessive woodpecker damage on ash trees. Woodpeckers eat beetle larvae, so they’re naturally attracted to infested trees.

How to Stop the Spread

Experts believe that beetle larvae made its way from Asia to the U.S. in wood packaging. When buying firewood, ensure it’s from local sources and store it far away from ash trees. If you notice any of the above signs of infestation, contact an arborist immediately.
