Caring for a person who is disabled or chronically ill can be physically, emotionally, and financially challenging. As a caregiver, you may find yourself stretched beyond your abilities and expectations, and once you reach this point, you may experience caregiver burnout. This is especially common when trying to help a senior—whether it’s a parent, spouse, or sibling—continue to live independently. Here’s what you know to avoid burnout, including how a respite care provider can help.

What Is Caregiver Burnout?

Caregiver burnout is a state of exhaustion in which you feel like your emotional, physical, and mental resources have been depleted. It often occurs when you try to do too much yourself without asking for help.

It can cause fatigue, stress, anxiety, and depression. Caregivers often feel guilty for spending time and money on themselves rather than on the person under their care. You may even experience negative feelings when helping your loved one, potentially putting them at risk.

Here are a few more signs to watch for:

  • Withdrawing from friends and family
  • Feeling sad, hopeless, irritable, out of control, or exhausted
  • Experiencing changes in appetite or sleep patterns
  • Drinking alcohol or using sleep medication excessively

How Can You Prevent Caregiver Burnout?

respite careFirst, set reasonable expectations for yourself and your loved one. Know what you are able to do and get help with the rest. Also, stay informed about the state of your loved one, and learn about what you can expect, especially with a progressive disease such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.

Second, make sure you have someone to talk to so you can express your feelings and frustrations and get emotional support. They can be a trusted friend, family member, neighbor, or professional, such as a therapist, social worker, or clergy member.

Be kind to yourself. Remember, if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to help your loved one. Schedule time to talk or walk, do a spa treatment, or meditate during your free time. Additionally, eat healthy foods, such as chicken and vegetables, and exercise daily.

Finally, ask for help. This may mean speaking to other family members about chipping in or taking advantage of respite care services. You can hire an outside company to temporarily care for your loved one to give you a break. This can be either in-home or at an assisted living location.
