While the summer makes adventures on a bike possible, it’s too cold to comfortably ride one now. Moving it to a storage unit will keep it safe and out of the way while you wait for the warmer weather. Use the tips below to ensure the bicycle is ready to ride when you come back for it.

How to Prepare Your Bike for Off-Season Storage

1. Clean It

If the bike is covered in dry mud, you may need to use a power-washer to clean it off. A dry, soft brush might also be helpful. Use a product designed for bicycle cleaning to wipe down the seat and handlebars. To prevent rust, ensure all surfaces are completely dry before putting the item in the storage unit.

2. Check the Tires

To prevent damage, install a hanging rack in your storage unit to keep the wheels from touching the floor. If you’d rather keep the bike standing, inflate the tires before heading to the storage facility.

3. Oil Up the Components

Your bicycle relies on the smooth movement of its parts, especially the brake cables, gears, and chains. Since the winter weather is drying, lubricate these components before placing the unit in long-term storage.

For the best results, add some lubricant to a rag. Then, wipe along the cables and grooves of the chain and gears. When you’re ready to take the bike out, the well-oiled parts will function effortlessly without jamming up.
