If you’re looking to invest in a home improvement project, it’s important to choose the right contractor to work with, especially when your working on renovations that require licensed professionals. The good news is that it’s easy to spot unreliable ones if you know what to look for.

3 Tell-Tale Signs of a Home Improvement Scam

1. They Show Up Unannounced

Sometimes a contractor, or someone claiming to be, will show up at your door. They may tell you that they were just passing by and couldn’t help but notice areas of your home’s exterior that could use some work and offer to repair them at a good rate. Or, they might say they’re working on a neighbor’s remodeling project and offer you a discount as well.

While it’s tempting to give them the benefit of the doubt, it’s wise to be cautious. Instead, you can ask for a card or their company name. Research them online, check out their credentials, and look at customer reviews. You should also look for a few more companies in the area and compare the rates.

2. They Pressure You to Sign

home improvementYou should always feel comfortable taking your time with each decision, weighing the pros and cons and everything in between. A reputable contractor will allow this and even encourage it. A dishonest one, on the other hand, will try to pressure you to quickly sign a contract with them.

They may insist that doing so will earn you a “limited time only” discount, or that the repairs you require can’t wait for you to think about your options. Don’t sign that contract. You should never feel pressured to make quick decisions.

3. They Avoid Pulling Permits

Usually, when a reputable company undertakes a project, it pulls permits for the work planned. That means that the company bears legal responsibility for that project – not you. A dishonest contractor might demand that you, as the homeowner, pull the permits.

This might indicate, among other aspects, that the contractor isn’t properly licensed. But even if they are, it’s wise to walk away in a case like this and look for another contractor.
