Flossing is essential for maintaining your oral health — when you do it right, that is. Ask your dentist to show you the proper technique at your next teeth cleaning to ensure you’re reaping the benefits. In the meantime, try to avoid some of these more common mistakes.

Which Mistakes Should You Watch for While Flossing?

1. Rushing the Task

Both sides of every single tooth require your attention. Don't just slide the floss straight down and then back up before moving on to the next space. Instead, cup the floss around the natural curve at the base of one tooth, pull it up, advance to a clean portion of thread, and slide it back down the same gap to repeat around the base of the other tooth before moving on.

2. Using Too Much Force

dentistThe primary purpose of flossing is to eliminate plaque that’s accumulated in hard-to-reach places. Because plaque is essentially a sticky paste, there’s no need to be aggressive. If you’re too rough, especially around the gum line, you could irritate the gums to the point of abrasion. Once an open wound develops, infection is likely.

3. Flossing Sporadically

You should floss between all your teeth at least once a day. Don’t just floss when it occurs to you or when there’s food stuck between your teeth. Commit to making flossing part of your daily routine, and create little reminders for yourself — for example, set an alarm on your phone or stick a post-it note on the bathroom sink — until doing so at the end of each day has become second nature.
