When you first start driving, there are many rules and regulations to remember, in addition to always staying attentive on the road. If you’re a beginner behind the wheel, you might wonder how to deal with particularly aggressive drivers who exceed the speed limit or tailgate you. Read on to learn more about how to remain calm and collected when other drivers act aggressively.

How to Deal With Aggressive Drivers

1. Change Lanes

If you notice another driver getting a bit too close for comfort in your rearview mirror, assess whether you’re able to change lanes. If you’re on a multi-lane road, and a mirror check shows that the coast is clear, put on your blinker and move over.

2. Check Your Speed

drivingIn some instances, another vehicle might tail you while driving because you’re actually not going fast enough. Wait until you see the next speed limit sign, and check your odometer. If you’re going too slow, press on the accelerator so that you’ll keep up with other traffic.

3. Allow Them to Pass

If an aggressive driver tailgates you, and you’re already going the speed limit, the wise choice may be to let them pass you. Rather than speeding up and potentially putting yourself and others at risk, keep driving the way you’re driving, and the aggressor will eventually pass you.

4. Pull Over

If you feel anxious when an aggressive driver starts honking at you, making hostile hand gestures, or trying to race you, take a quick break from driving. As soon as you reach the next exit or parking lot, put on your turn signal, slow down, and get off the road until you feel comfortable again.
