Hawaii is home to a diverse community of insects, and you should learn to recognize those around your home so you’ll know when to get professional pest control help. Since centipedes are commonly found on the islands, here are some essential details to help you manage them on your property.

Centipede FAQ

How do I identify centipedes?

There is a variety of centipedes in Hawaii, including the lithobius, mecistocephalus, and scolopendra. This insect has a long, thin, segmented body that can vary in length with a series of small feet on each side. It may appear brown or reddish-brown and has two antennae on its head.

Centipedes can be active at night or day and often live under foliage, rocks, and logs where there is moisture and warmth. They’re carnivorous and eat other insects.

Are they dangerous?

Scolopendra is the only dangerous species. Its venomous bite can cause swelling, muscle cramps, and a burning pain and warrants a trip to the hospital. The same goes for pets that are bitten.

This centipede can grow up to 12 inches and is the most recognizable species in Hawaii. While not fatal, bites can become infected and lead to other health complications.

Can they damage my home?

Centipedes aren’t likely to damage your home, but they will be a constant nuisance if they move inside. Outside, they can damage foliage and interfere with plant growth if there’s a large concentration.

How do I keep them away?

pest-control-wahiawaCentipedes are attracted to food sources and shelter. Keep them out by eliminating each.

Seal any openings around your baseboards, home exterior, and crawlspaces. Trim back overhanging foliage, and keep a three-foot distance between shrubs and the sides of your home. Remove wood, scrap, and other debris piles from your yard, and clear dead foliage that could serve as a nesting spot.

Inside, address water leaks right away. These contribute to the dark, damp environment centipedes like.
