As the interlocking steel wires are difficult to disassemble and hard to hide behind, chain-link fences are placed around perimeters to boost property security. Although durable, the fencing can be susceptible to rust when not properly maintained. To keep the iron oxide from eating away at your investment, follow the advice outlined below.

How to Stop Rust Formation on Chain-Link Fences

Rust resembles a flaky red, orange, or brown powder. It forms when oxygen from water makes contact with iron. When carbon dioxide in the air mixes with the water, carbonic acid forms. The acid breaks the water down into hydrogen and oxygen and dissolves some of the iron. In a process called oxidation, the iron deposits and oxygen bond together to create rust. The corrosive residue forms faster when oxygen and iron are left to bind with soils, chemicals, sulfur compounds, and any other grime on the fence.

Keeping grime off the chain-link fence is the best way to eliminate the conditions that cause rust formation. Scrubbing the links with a soft-bristle brush soaked in warm, soapy water with mild detergent will remove layers of gunk. You can also use a pressure washer with a cleaning solution to complete the job faster. To curb oxidation, coat the fence with a rust inhibitor. The membrane is applied with a brush or spray and will keep acids, chemicals, and other corrosive substances from binding to the metal.

How to Clean Rust Spots

chain link fenceWhen not caught early, rust can spread and weaken the structural integrity of the entire chain-link fence. Brush off the fence to search for minor rust spots. Use a garden hose to break up the rust and remove flaky areas. Next, scrub the spot with sandpaper or steel wool until the rust is gone. To prevent it from resurfacing, coat the area with a rust inhibitor afterward.
