If you are having trouble conceiving a child, your doctor may suggest an IVF procedure. With in vitro fertilization, the ovaries are stimulated using hormones so that multiple mature eggs can be retrieved from the ovarian follicles. An egg is then fertilized in a lab with specially processed viable sperm. Once the sperm has fertilized the egg, the embryo is transferred into the uterus or frozen for pregnancy at a later date. Learn how to prepare for this cutting-edge procedure below.

How to Prepare for an IVF Procedure

1. Get Approved First

Before you start IVF, your doctor will conduct ovarian reserve testing, an infectious disease screening, and a uterine cavity exam. If you have a male partner, the doctor will also conduct a semen analysis to rule out any fertility issues on their side. The results of these tests will confirm whether IVF is an option for you and also help guide the approach. For example, depending on the outcome of the semen analysis, the doctor may recommend using a sperm donor to maximize the chances of success.

2. Prepare Your Mind

IVF procedurePrepare yourself emotionally by deciding some of the key questions that may arise related to IVF in advance. Implanting multiple embryos could mean twins or triplets, depending on how many eggs are implanted, for example. Talk honestly with your partner about how comfortable you both are using donor eggs or sperm, if needed. Finally, discuss alternative scenarios. IVF isn't a guarantee, and you may want to talk about options like using a gestational carrier, if needed.

3. Get Your Body Ready

Once you’ve decided to go ahead with an IVF procedure, there are steps you can take to increase the odds of success. Cut behaviors that might impede fertility, like smoking and drinking. Minimize stress by practicing breathing exercises doing fertility  acupuncture or mindful meditation. Eat a well-balanced diet and take prenatal vitamins if recommended. Consult your doctor regarding exercise, as some professionals recommend cutting back or limiting high-impact workouts during IVF.
