Missouri’s frigid winter temperatures keep residents from using their in-ground pools until spring arrives. However, if you intend to use the swimming pool when the weather warms up, it’s essential to keep up with maintenance—even if you’re not planning to use it for a few months. Here are a few tips to help you manage your pool during the off-season.

How to Care for Your In-Ground Pool During the Winter

1. Use Chlorine

If you don’t intend to completely drain the pool in the off-season, make sure the water chemistry is accurate to keep it clean. Bacteria will flourish in chemically unbalanced water, and chlorine will prevent it from growing; however, don’t use too much. Otherwise, you could accidentally bleach the pool’s liner.

2. Maintain the Water Chemistry

in-ground poolChemical testing kits will tell you if your pool’s chemistry is off so that you can make adjustments. Ideally, the pool water’s pH should be balanced between 7.2 and 7.6 for the winter months. You’ll also need to test the water’s alkalinity and calcium levels to ensure they are balanced. Neglecting this step can severely damage the surface of the pool and the equipment.

3. Add an Algaecide

Algae growth is the reason why pool waters turn green, but you can prevent this by using an algaecide. You should add it on the last day you intend to use the pool, and run the pump for about 24 hours before shutting it down for the season. If you forget this step earlier in the season, it’s not too late to do it. It ensures the water will not become murky with algae, and it makes it easier to prepare the pool for spring.

4. Keep the Pool Cover Clean

Invest in a sturdy pool cover to protect the water and pool interior from leaves, pests, and twigs. However, the cover can still accumulate debris, including snow, which can stretch out the fabric and reduce its protection. Ensure your pool cover weights and attachments are secure, and promptly clear off any debris that falls onto the cover.
