When you stop at a seafood restaurant, your first choice might be a rich lobster or hearty salmon dish. If you haven’t ordered many crabs, you might be surprised at the different species filling restaurant fridges today. Here are just three of the many you might encounter on a fine dining menu.

3 Types of Crab to Sample at a Seafood Restaurant

1. Dungeness Crab

This delicious crab can be picked up along nearly the entire West Coast of North America, but it’s named after the Dungeness Spit, an area in Northwest Washington where you’ll find plenty of this sought-after species. When you break open the shell of a Dungeness, you’ll find sweet and tender pink meat. Since this species must be 6.25 inches long before taken from its habitat, one crab in its entirety can feed two people!

2. Blue Crab

seafood restaurantNamed for its blue-green, grayish shell, this crab’s meat tastes both a little salty and sweet. Its shell may turn red when cooked. This species is found along the Atlantic coast.

Order this variety steamed and whole, and get ready for a workout—you’ll have to break off the extremities and crack the body in half to enjoy your seafood reward.

3. King Crab

While this may be the hardest, spiniest crab to crack open, its rich, tender white meat is the closest to lobster. It’s usually caught near Alaska, which is why you might know it as Alaskan King Crab. This name also aligns with its size—King Crabs may be up to 10 feet in length! When the legs and claws are cracked open, you’ll enjoy club-like strips of meat with crimson edges.
