If you’re responsible for taking care of someone’s estate and affairs after they pass away, you’ll need copies of their death certificate. This legal document contains information about the deceased, including their name, address, and surviving spouse, as well as the date, place, time, and cause of death. You’ll need a certified death certificate, as opposed to an information certificate, before you can obtain a permit for burial services or cremation, access the deceased’s bank accounts and assets, or close down billing accounts. Here’s how to get one.

A Guide to Getting a Death Certificate

1. Funeral Home or Mortuary

You can order a death certificate from the funeral home at the time of death, and they’ll manage the request for you. There’s no limit to how many death certificates you can purchase. They cost between $10 and $20 for your first copy, and any additional copies in the same order often cost less. Most people get at least 10, as many organizations require proof of death before they hand over control of the account or benefit for which you’re claiming. Also, you can often reimburse the costs from the estate.

2. County or State Vital Records

burial servicesYou can order a death certificate from your county or state vital records office. County offices receive death certificates first, so start there. These certificates take a little longer to reach the state office.

When you place an order, include the deceased’s personal information. Some states only issue death certificates to immediate family members, so you may have to provide proof of your relationship, too. There are free letter templates available online to ensure you cover everything they need.

3. Third-Party

Several third-party websites provide access to official, government-issued vital records. It costs slightly more, as you have to pay a shipping fee and processing fee, as well as the cost of the document itself. Be cautious when choosing a website, as some sell incorrect or non-official documentation. To check, call them and ask for official documentation that proves they’re a legitimate business.
