If your residential HVAC system is running efficiently, your home should feel comfortable no matter which room you’re in. Cold spots throughout your home indicate that there’s an issue isolated pockets are receiving no heat, there’s a problem somewhere. Below are three reasons why your home’s temperature may be uneven.

How To Get Rid of Cold Spots in Your Home

1. Get a Properly Sized HVAC System

If your home has been renovated, your HVAC unit may no longer be big enough to cover the whole building. According to the Department of Energy, a unit should provide at least one ton of cooling or heating for every 400 to 500 square feet of space, depending on how well-insulated your home is.

2. Invest in Zoning

residential HVACSometimes hot and cold spots are a result of a home’s architecture. No two rooms are the same — some receive daylight all day, while others remain in the shade. Some rooms benefit from other heating sources such as a chimney running through it or hot water pipes underneath it, while other rooms are in the furthest extremities of the home.

Many homeowners with cold spots resulting from this issue use thermostats to control the temperatures of different areas of the house, a practice known as zoning.

3. Unblock Air Vents

Ducts and air vents regulate a home’s temperature. Warm or cold air is pumped into the rooms through a “supply” vent and pulled back into the HVAC unit through a “return” vent, thereby maintaining a cyclical flow of air. Check your vents to make sure they aren’t blocked or closed. They may be covered by a rug or piece of furniture.

Some homeowners close vents if they use a room infrequently or wish it to remain a different temperature from the rest of the house. However, closing air vents can eventually damage your residential HVAC system’s blower motor, so avoid doing so.
