Your HVAC system is one of the biggest energy consumers in your home. Between the fuel needed to power your furnace, and the electricity needed to run the blower motors and power your air conditioning, you spend a lot of money and energy each month to keep your house comfortable. Below are some tips to help you reduce these expenditures.

3 Tips to Improve the Efficiency of Your HVAC System

1. Don't Block Airflow

Your HVAC system turns on and off based on signals received by your household thermostat. To maintain thermostat responsiveness, the air must be able to move freely throughout the house. Ensure that furniture, boxes, and dust bunnies are not blocking the vents and leave open the doors to any rooms you intend to heat or cool. If warm or cool air cannot reach the thermostat, the heating and cooling system could continue running well after it should have shut off.

2. Close Off Empty Rooms

HVACInstead of opening doors and vents, close the vents and shut the doors to unoccupied rooms. This lessens the cubic footage of space your system must heat or cool, saves energy, and reduces your utility bills. However, be sure air can still flow freely throughout the rooms containing a thermostat.

3. Schedule Yearly Maintenance

Each spring, before the heat of summer has you cranking up your air conditioning, have an HVAC contractor give your system a once-over. They'll clean the blower chamber, oil the motor, tighten the belts, and address any minor problems that might be interfering with the system's efficiency. Not only does this improve performance and reduce energy consumption, but it increases the lifespan of your HVAC system.
