Winter is harsh on carpets. Dirty slush, road salt, and extra traffic from visitors can leave it dirty and stained. To minimize damage, below are a few carpet stain removal tricks for the most frequent issues you’ll face in winter.

How to Remove Common Winter Stains

1. Salt

Salting the pavement helps keep it from freezing, but the salt residue can leave a white crust when it dries, and it can also contain added colors. Thankfully, salt stains don't sink into the fibers of a carpet.

Apply a mixture of one part water and one part vinegar either with a spray bottle or by pouring a small amount on the spot. The vinegar helps break down the salt. Rub the surface lightly with a cloth or a brush, then dab the liquid away with a dry towel. Don't push down when scrubbing or soaking up the liquid; this pushes the stain deeper into the carpet.

2. Mud & Slush

Carpet Stain RemovalThis is easiest to clean while it's still frozen, as you can pick up most of the mess. If it has melted, soap and hot water will help loosen the dirt. Press a towel into the carpet to soak up the liquid, then use clean water to rinse away the rest and dry the area with another clean cloth. Once you've gotten as much of the water as you can, wait for the area to dry, then vacuum over it thoroughly to remove dirt.

3. Wine

The holiday season means parties, and parties lead to spills. The more quickly you can perform carpet stain removal for a wine spill, the less severe the stain will be.

Soak up as much of the wine as you can before it sinks into the carpet, then add water to dilute what's left and start blotting again. Repeat until you've removed as much of the color as possible. Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it generously to the remaining spot. The baking soda helps neutralize acidity and soak up the stain. Let it dry in place, then vacuum the area.
