Your garage door goes through a lot of strain on a regular basis. In the average home, it’s likely to raise and lower at least several times a day throughout the week. It’s no surprise, then, that the structure is vulnerable to occasional problems. Here are three signs that you may need to schedule repairs.

Does Your Garage Door Need to Be Repaired?

1. It Appears Off Balance

Ideally, the garage door should come to a gentle rest when it touches the ground, appearing perfectly even from one side to the other. If it appears even slightly out of place or uneven, then it’s likely out of balance for some reason. It may even look as though it’s sagging in some parts. When you raise and lower a door that isn’t balanced, it can strain the spring that’s carrying more weight. That can weaken it significantly and eventually cause it to break.

2. It Won’t Open & Close

One way to troubleshoot this problem is to confirm that nothing is standing in the way of the door or blocking the sensor. This could prevent it from properly rising and falling.

3. It Suddenly Moves Slowly

It shouldn’t take more than a moment for the door to begin raising or lowering when you press the button. If it takes significantly longer than usual, have a garage door repair technician investigate promptly. This issue could be due to a number of reasons, such as dry tracks and rollers. Often, adding lubrication will help speed operations back to their normal rate. Even a lack of general maintenance could be to blame; your technician will investigate the pulleys and springs to ensure they haven’t broken down or lost tension.
