Whether you’re a parent considering a new kitchen design or you’re modifying your existing kitchen to accommodate curious toddlers, there are plenty of ways to childproof this area of your home. Understanding the many hazards in the kitchen, including sharp objects and sources of electricity and heat, can help you better prepare things for your little one. Fortunately, setting up your space so that it’s safe for your child is simple with the following tweaks.

How to Kid-Proof Your Kitchen

1. Lock or Unplug Appliances

There are childproof locks available for many major appliances, such as refrigerators and ovens. Keep smaller items like blenders, coffee makers, and microwaves unplugged when not in use to minimize the risk of injury.

2. Keep Sharp Objects Up High

While knives, pizza cutters, scissors, and other common sharp objects should be kept up high, there are other sharp objects which should also be stowed above your child’s reach. In particular, plastic wrap and aluminum foil boxes may have sharp edges, which can cause serious cuts and scrapes.

3. Consider Rounded Edges

4. Move Cleaning Agents

Many homeowners store cleaning agents in their kitchens. Because many of these products contain components that are dangerous to children, they should be stored safely out of your child’s reach. Stow them in a cabinet with pull-out shelves that your child can’t reach.

5. Establish a Kid-Safe Cabinet

You might also consider incorporating one cabinet in your kitchen design that your child is allowed to explore freely. Stash old plastic bowls, plates, or cups you seldom use in there for creative play. If your child is old enough to grab their own snacks, designate this area for healthy choices, such as dried fruit and granola bars.
