As important as fall maintenance is to furnace function, mid-winter checks are equally integral. They ensure the heating system hasn’t experienced any major hiccups and allow you to schedule timely furnace repairs that avoid high energy bills and premature breakdowns. Below, review your wintertime heating system checklist to enjoy a comfortable home all season long.

5 Mid-Winter Heater Checks You Can’t Skip

1. Be Mindful of Any Changes

Be aware of any changes to your furnace, such as loud or unusual noises indicating problems such as broken belts, weak ductwork points, or loose motors, burners, and blower assembly parts. If you suspect a major problem, contact your local furnace repair team immediately to prevent further damage and higher utility bills.

2. Clean or Change the Air Filter

Maintain a clean air filter throughout winter to keep air flowing through the unit efficiently, which will prevent heat-related damage and general stress. Follow your owner’s manual for filter cleaning and replacing while keeping factors such as pets in mind. Pet fur, hair, and dander clogs filters at a faster rate.

3. Maintain the Area Around the Unit

Maintain a perimeter of at least five feet and clean the unit to prevent excessive dust and dirt buildup that can also create fire hazards. This will also eliminate musty odors and energy loss.

4. Inspect the Furnace for Damage

Check the appliance for dents, cracks, and other signs of damage during cleaning sessions. Depending on the age of the unit and the severity of the damage, you may want to consider furnace replacement services. A new unit can have a dramatic impact on energy efficiency, especially if it features the ENERGY STAR® seal of approval.

5. Keep the Vents Clear

Ensure that the vents around your home have plenty of room to circulate air. Remove any furniture that’s in the way and wipe dust and debris from the vents every few weeks to improve efficiency. If it has been some time since your ducts were serviced, have them cleaned and inspected for leaks to prevent circulating dust and other harmful allergens. Leaking ductwork can also present a carbon monoxide hazard without repair.
