Creating a memorial shadow box is an excellent way to commemorate your loved one who has passed away. They’re visually striking and will remind you of the deceased. However, it can be a challenge to figure out what items to include. Here are some suggestions to inspire you.

What to Put in Your Loved One’s Memorial Shadow Box

1. Photos

Choose pictures from when your loved one was a child up until they passed away. Looking through old photos can be difficult, so take your time. If you’re displaying the box at the funeral, make sure there’s a picture of your loved one with their spouse and each of their children so no one feels left out. If you have too many photos, include an album or envelope so the pictures stay organized.

2. Favorite Poems or Quotes

If your loved one had a favorite song, poem, book, or movie, include a quote they would love. It doesn’t have to deal with loss or grief. You can choose something silly, as long as it helps portray who they were.

3. Awards or Medals

4. Obituary or Funeral Program

If you’re making the shadow box after the funeral, include items from the service, such as the obituary, program, or even flowers. At the funeral, ask people to write about their favorite memory with your loved one. Display a few of the notes, and keep the rest in an envelope in the shadow box.

5. Clothing or Accessories

If your loved one had a favorite shirt or dress, put it in the box. You can use it as a background by stretching the fabric over the back of the box. This might require you to rip out seams of the article of clothing, though. Also, include rings, necklaces, or hair accessories. However, don’t put in options that are too valuable or that you or your family would like to wear.

6. Souvenirs

One of the best ways to remember a loved one is to think about the trips you went on and experiences you had with them. Look through their belongings to see if they kept tickets, programs, or postcards from your travels together.
