The dishwasher is easily one of the most dependable appliances in your kitchen. While it’s fine to place dirty pots, pans, and plates inside, it’s essential to be mindful of what shouldn’t go in there, as well. Some items could quickly become damaged and also lead to an unexpected visit from a plumber. Here’s what you need to know about what shouldn’t go in your dishwasher.

What Not to Put in the Dishwasher

1. Items with Paper Labels

Even though it may be tough to remove those sticky adhesive labels from jars and bottles, it’s essential to make sure it’s all off before you put the item in the dishwasher. While the heat in the appliance will loosen and ultimately remove the label, those sticky bits can become lodged in the dishwasher’s drain and filter. Clogs like these can prevent the machine from working correctly and even lead to damage to the components inside.

2. Nonstick Pots & Pans

Wisconsin Rapids, WI plumberSome nonstick pots and pans are marked as “dishwasher safe,” but it’s generally best to hand-wash them even if that’s the case. The nonstick coating isn’t designed to hold up well when exposed to repeated hot wash cycles. The barrier will eventually break down, and the surface may flake off both in the washer and while you’re cooking. Similar to paper labels, the flakes could slowly build up in the drain and require a plumber’s attention. They are also not healthy to ingest if they flake off while cooking.

3. Especially Sharp Knives

Sharp knives are also often touted as being safe to wash in the dishwasher, but the machine can slowly cause the blades to lose their integrity. You might notice at some point that they seem especially dull, both in functionality and in appearance. Avoid damage to your knives by hand washing them instead.

4. Delicate Objects or Heirlooms

It’s tempting to put items like elegant vases and antique figurines in the wash to give them a thorough cleaning. However, in doing so, you could put its finish at risk. That’s especially true of older items and family heirlooms. Don’t risk the integrity of something that has been passed down for generations! Wash it by hand with gentle soaps or cleansers to ensure that it stays in its existing condition.
