Garage doors are equipped with sensors to keep small children and pets safe, but nothing is foolproof. Garage doors are heavy and rely on extreme tension to operate, and sometimes their torsion springs can break. That’s why parents should teach their kids about garage door safety and practice these good habits.

How to Teach Your Kids About Garage Door Safety

1.  Keep the Remote Out of Reach

Children are curious and enjoy playing with gadgets, and many will be tempted to see the door move up and down. Keep all of your garage door remotes hidden and secure when they’re not needed. Make sure the wall control is at least five feet from the ground and not easy for little ones to access.

2. Explain the Boundaries

Encourage them to play elsewhere, and always keep the garage door shut to prevent them from playing inside the space when the door is open.

3. Have Your Door Serviced Routinely

A technician should inspect your garage door at least once a year. During their visit, they should check for broken parts, lubricate rollers and springs, check the alignment and balance, and test the safety features. If the door is older, they might recommend updating it to a newer model.
