During winter, people across the country are enjoying ski slopes, skating rinks, and sledding hills. While these activities are exciting, they also come with a risk of injury, much like any sport. To keep yourself and your kids safe this winter, be aware of these potential sports injuries and take steps to avoid them.

How to Stay Safe This Winter

1. Arms & Wrists

When you slip or fall, you might use your hands to break your fall, or you may land on your shoulder. This can lead to wrist injuries and dislocated shoulders, depending on how you land. Avoid this type of damage by being conscious of your skill level and taking it easy. Don't try a slope you aren't ready for when skiing or snowboarding, and start slow when skating.

2. Ankles

Sports InjuriesSlipping on ice or falling during sports activities can easily lead you to sprain or break an ankle. Make sure equipment—such as skates and ski shoes—fits correctly and is fastened securely for reliable support. Wrap your ankles or wear a brace for extra protection.

3. Concussion

This is a risk with all winter sports, as you can hit your head on ice or other hard surfaces. To avoid these sports injuries, wear a helmet for all winter activities, including sledding. If you fall and hit your head, immediately let someone know, and have them help you watch for the signs of concussion. These symptoms include blurred vision, dizziness, confusion, and vomiting.
